THE SACRED BAND GOES NORTH – TO WAR!
Here is the new, revised and expanded Author’s Cut edition of BEYOND SANCTUARY, the first ever full-length novel to take you BEYOND the notorious Thieves World™ fantasy universe, where gods still stalk the land, warring with demons and human sorcerers and trampling unfortunate humanity underfoot.
If you like stories of bold brave knights employed in meritorious duty, or tales of ladies delicate and fair, be warned. Beyond Sanctuary, set at the foot of notorious Wizardwall, may be too much for your sensibilities. There wizards, bards, and maidens mingle with murderers and thieves, and the fight breaking out at the next table may be the one that ends your life.
The hero of BEYOND SANCTUARY is Tempus, leader of mercenaries and warrior-servant of Vashanka, god of storm and war. With Niko, Cime, and the Froth Daughter Jihan, Tempus faces the archmage Datan and his unholy followers – in a battle for the Rankan Empire’s survival and that of his very soul. BEYOND SANCTUARY is the first novel in Janet Morris’ BEYOND series, followed by BEYOND THE VEIL and BEYOND WIZARDWALL.

Beyond Sanctuary Sacred Band Series Book 2 eBook Janet Morris

Once upon a time, I savored the pages of Beyond Sanctuary, the first and best spin-off novel of the legendary Thieves’ World fantasy series, written by the equally legendary Janet Morris. This would have been shortly after the original publication in 1985 and enjoyed between endless hours of Dungeons and Dragons. Boy, those were the days.

So, when I heard that almost 30 years later, Perseid Press had released an “Author’s Cut” edition, I could not resist the urge to stroll down memory lane. And oh, what memories they were. These were the years that I feel are the golden-age of fantasy fiction; the height of fantasy imaginations gone wild in every nerd with a Crown Royal velvet bag full of dice! Yes, we were nerds back then and proud of it.

However, Beyond Sanctuary is anything but a simple and shallow gaming campaign put to paper. No, this is fantasy storytelling at its very best. Intelligent and written with a literary expertise that leaves other, lesser novels cowering in shame. This is classic literature in the finest vein.

It follows the adventures of the cursed immortal, Tempus Thales and his brothers-in-arms, the Sacred Band of Stepsons. Sorcery, gods, demons and war are on the menu in a meal that will leave you satisfied but definitely wanting more. The world that Morris has masterfully constructed is as beautiful as it is terrifying. From the filthy back alleys of Sanctuary to the perilous dangers of Wizardwall, the settings are rich, detailed and full of life (or death as it were).

Many characters grace the pages of this epic tale, each with their own well-developed back-stories, motivations, emotions and characteristics. In fact, the characters of Beyond Sanctuary may well be the aspect that you will remember the most. They are fleshed-out and believable in every way, whether a main character or a momentary stranger passing by. You will love some of them, and hate others. You will share their hopes, fears, anger and sometimes tears.

This novel is brimming with action and suspense with some of the best detailed and realistic action sequences the genre has to offer. There are times when you’ll find your own heartbeat racing as you turn pages in hopes of catching your breath. Yes, it’s that good. If it is solid, classic, well-written fantasy that you are after, then look no further. Janet Morris delivers a tale that is hard to beat.

I’ve done my best to present this review without spoilers, and perhaps that is for the best or this review would end up as a novel itself. Reading Beyond Sanctuary for a second time, after almost 30 years was like a wonderful visit from an old friend. Highly recommended.

Beyond Sanctuary Sacred Band Series Book 2 eBook Janet Morris Reviews

Read this like 20+ years ago. Liked it then, but didn't fully appreciate it. Don't know if it's the nostalgia, but for whatever reason going back to Sanctuary(well, in the vicinity at least) felt pretty good. Long live the Vulgar Unicorn!
I first read these books almost 30 years ago and they've stayed in my head ever since.

I recently rediscovered them and I'm certainly glad I did. I enjoy them even more now that I'm older.

'Beyond Sanctuary' has everything an avid fantasy reader could want; undying, cursed heroes, plot twist, demon-sworn archmages, and exciting, well written battle scenes.

Janet Morris spins a tale of epic proportions that has stayed with me for most of my life.
Beyond Sanctuary Janet Morris & Chris Morris

If you loved the original Sanctuary tales of Tempus and his Stepsons, you'll adore these expanded stories. This is the demi-god on krrf.

This impressive "author's cut" includes more details, characterization and motivation than the original stories were able to include. It's amazing how Morris can take a character as reprehensible as Tempus and make him sympathetic to readers. Although he's an immortal, hardened by centuries of loss, death and betrayal, he still has a vulnerable side. Grant you, it's awfully hard to find, but it's there.

Tempus' enemies are equally vengeful, bitter and powerful. He's up against some of the best. Those who haven't tried to kill him, sometimes become his allies.

This is a darker, more detailed look at the low lifes of Sanctuary. I highly recommend this book.

Janet E. Morris’ Beyond Sanctuary is an impressive writing of dark fantasy set in a multiverse world, where nothing is as it seems. The book is chock full of magic, horror, covert military forays, and mature themes, written in such a manner as to pique your curiosity and hold your interest. Morris introduced me to a new language, both for adult situations and everyday living. “‘Ahhhh,’ her premediated rippling takes him over passion’s edge, and he is falling, place and provenance forgotten…” There are many characters in this story, too many to mention, but the two main characters, Tempus and Niko carry the story. Tempus begins living a curse in which those who love him get hurt and Niko recovers from losing his sacred partner, while a god and sorceress are vying for control of his mind. These characters are larger than life and are not afraid to take on gods and/or anything that is thrown at them. Lovers of action-packed fantasy and other worldly happenings are in for a thrill!
BEYOND SANCTUARY is a great story by a master storyteller. I don't know how else to say it. Unlike too many novels that get dragged down by reams and reams of exposition and description, author Janet Morris keeps things moving, letting the story unfold through action and character, and revealing the world of the story organically - some here, some there, details peppered throughout and adding up to a full, satisfying whole. Sometimes in fantasy I get swamped with names and histories and geography lessons, but not here. Morris's engaging writing style is fluid but not simplistic, evocative but not overwhelmed by minutiae. It's a real pleasure to read.

I came across this book while looking for other volumes in the wonderful ... IN HELL series (Heroes in Hell, Poets in Hell, Lawyers in Hell, Rogues in Hell, etc.) , for which Morris serves as creator, contributor, and editor. I'm really glad I've gotten reacquainted with her writing and I look forward to reading a lot more. I'd recommend BEYOND SANCTUARY to anybody, without reservation.
